Introduction to the Flower of Life

The Flower of Life is one of the oldest symbols in human history and one of the most important in sacred geometry. It can be seen in ancient Egypt, India, China, even in the artwork of Leonardo Da Vinci. It is said to be a symbolic representation of the 7 Days of Creation in Genesis, as well as a symbolic representation of the start of human life from conception. Its a symbol of generation and continuous expanding and growing of our universe.

Seed of Life

It all starts with a circle. The Circle is the most perfect of shapes as it has no edges, in Symbology it represents God. With God’s first action “Let there be Light” the circle moves, with each day God performs another action represented by a different circle

The 6th Day creates the “Seed of Life”, the first fully completed shape. The 7th day God rests, symbolically this rest is the completion of this first seed. Sometimes represented by a final outer circler encompassing the seed, to show that it is one completed shape.

Numerically this 7 circle shape, follows the same numerical philosophy as other systems with 7 components. 7, according to Pythagoras, is the Number of Law. Universal Laws are established with 7 components. The 7 traditional planets, 7 chakras, 7 musical notes, even the 7 Hermetic Principals, 7 Days of Creation.

The Seed of Life’s significance is further exemplified once this repeating pattern expands past one seed. Each circle is the potential to become its own seed. This creates a pattern that can expand into infinity, like the energy in the universe around us.

The Flower of Life

Although this pattern repeats forever, the “Flower of Life” is the Seed of Life repeated 18 times, forming a large net of intersections and patterns.

The first of these patterns is what is known as the “Egg of Life”. The symbolic representation of the first cell divisions after conception.

Next is the “Tree of Life” also known as Kabbalah. Kabbalah is an ancient esoteric mysticism teaching that shows the symbolic representation of energy coming from God, down to our material realm, and back again. Kabbalah is the foundation of all Abrahamic religions for example Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Kabbalah is represented by its signature sephirot pattern, which is found within the Flower of Life.

Ultimately such a simple image, a circle, becomes one of the most widely versatile repeating patterns. Symbolically representing Life, Spirit, Energy and so much more to cover. Its a symbol of sacred geometry, the use of geometric symbols to represent and explain vast spiritual concepts. Sacred geometry is a realm of its own. The sheer amount of concepts that it can explain geometrically is astounding. Even the perfect distance between the earth the moon and the sun can be symbolically represented with a process called squaring the circle. The Flower of Life is just one of the many powerful sacred geometry symbols, which this page is only a brief intro. To fully explain the flower of life is an endeavor for next time.
